On 23rd July 1816, twelve young men, priests and seminarians, publicly pledged to found the Society of Mary at the ancient Marian Shrine of Fourviere, Lyon, France. The Marist priests, the Marist Brothers, the Marist Sisters, and the Third Order of Mary recognize in this first external act their common origin.
